After the bazaar, we headed to Al-Ghouri complex (built by the Mamluk sultans in 1505) to watch the Whirling Dervishes. The performances are open to the public and we had a chance to mingle with the locals.
Whirling Dervishes are members of a branch of Islam called Sufis. Sufis aspire through meditation, dance and music to attain union with God. Through their ritual spinning dance, they enter a hypnotic trance. But these performances are more for entertainment then religious.
